What Are the Signs of a Bad Battery?

We are going to list the signs of a bad battery below so you know what to look for in your automobile. One thing to take into account is the age of your car’s battery. If it is older than three years old, it is going bad. It won’t be long before you will need to replace the car battery.

Battery Light

Your dashboard may also give you a warning that the battery is dying if the battery light turns on and remains on. This is a sign that there is a problem with the battery. It can also be an indication that you have alternator problems. Finally, it can point to electrical system problems.

Hard Starts

It is going to be difficult to get your automobile started if the battery is dying. It may crank several times before it fires up, or it may not fire up at all. If you have had to jump-start your battery quite a bit lately, it’s time to replace it because it is too old and no longer carrying a charge.

Dim Lights

You may start to notice that things are dimmer and slowing down. This, too, is a sign that the battery is dying. The lights will be dim and your power accessories will operate slower than they normally do. In some cases, the accessories may fail to operate at all.

Corrosion

If you suspect that your battery is going bad, pop the hood when the engine is cold and check for corrosion. If the battery is leaking, you will have corrosion on the battery terminals in the battery cables. The corrosion on the cables will be on the connectors.

Rancid Odors

You may also smell rancid odors around the battery. This is an indication that sulfuric acid is leaking out of the battery. Unfortunately, this leak cannot be repaired. Rather, you will need to replace the battery with a new one to get rid of the rotten egg odor in your engine.

Case Problems

Finally, if there is a problem with the battery case, it is time to replace the battery. Older batteries tend to have issues with the chemical reactions that go on inside of them. When this happens, the cases can warp or crack. They may also bubble.
